According to legend, the native Maori left Hawaii over 1,000 years ago in seagoing canoes and arrived in "The Land of the Long White Cloud." GSeologically young, New Zealand has long stretches of golden sand beaches, towering Alps, deep lakes, and a few active volcanoes.

Known as one of the most scenic countries on earth, its landscape can change dramatically within the space of a single day’s drive. Sub-tropical rainforests, rugged mountains (some, as yet, unexplored), wild rivers filled with trout, turquoise seascapes, sheep and deer farms, art and craft centers where native woods and greenstone (jade) are carved, are just a few highlights. It is a mecca for outdoor adventure seekers (bunjy jumping started here!) but also a great destination for folks who just want to amble in a camper van. -Karolyn Wrightson, Essential Down Under Travel
